Several Ways a Trunk Becomes a Problem
Trunk lockouts come in a few flavors, each requiring a slightly different approach:
- Keys locked inside the trunk — Most common. You set the keys down to load groceries, closed the trunk, and now they're inside. We open the cabin first and use the interior trunk release.
- Trunk released but won't open — You hit the release button, you hear the click, but the trunk won't pop. Often a broken latch, broken release cable, or mechanical seizure.
- Lost trunk key (on cars where trunk has a separate key) — Some older vehicles have a separate trunk key that isn't the same as the door / ignition key. Lose the trunk key and the cabin keys won't open the trunk.
- Trunk lock cylinder broken or seized — Rust, freezing weather, attempted theft damage, or just age
- Battery dead, no electric trunk release — Modern cars with electric-only trunk releases lock you out if the battery dies
How We Open Locked Trunks
The right method depends on the vehicle, the cause, and what's actually inside the trunk that you're trying to reach. In rough order of preference:
- Open cabin, use interior trunk release — Most modern cars have an interior release button or lever. We unlock the cabin door, hit the release, trunk pops. Simplest method.
- Fold-down rear seat access — Many sedans have fold-down rear seats that allow trunk access from inside the cabin. Useful when the trunk release is broken.
- Lock-cylinder bypass — For cars with a key trunk lock and a broken or missing key, we can pick or bypass the cylinder directly.
- Pop the trunk emergency release — All cars from 2002+ have a glow-in-the-dark emergency release inside the trunk for safety. Combined with cabin access, this opens almost anything.
- Mechanical release access — For older vehicles or those with broken release systems, we can sometimes access the trunk latch directly through internal panels.
Special Situations
- SUV / hatchback liftgates — Different mechanism than a trunk lid. We handle these too. Mostly electric, sometimes finicky when the battery is weak.
- Pickup truck cab and bed locks — Different again. Both we handle.
- Wallet or important items locked inside — Tell us when you call. We try to prioritize quick non-destructive access.
- Wet groceries / perishables — We move fast on these. Frozen food on a hot day is a deadline.
