Eventually, the springs weaken, the wafers wear, debris collects, and a key that used to slip in and turn smoothly starts catching, sticking, or refusing to turn at all. The good news: in most cases this is repairable, not a full replacement situation.

- Key won't go in all the way — debris or wear in the keyway preventing full insertion
- Key goes in but won't turn — worn wafers, broken springs, or the steering wheel lock engaged

Common Causes of Ignition Failure
- Heavy keychain — the #1 cause we see. Years of pulling down on the cylinder with a loaded keychain accelerates wear dramatically.
- Worn key cutting the wafers — a copy of a copy with slightly off dimensions gradually files down the internal cylinder wafers
- Debris in the keyway — pocket lint, dust, even gum can foul the mechanism
- Cold weather — lubricant thickens, marginal cylinders that work in summer fail in winter
- Steering wheel pressure — trying to turn the key while the steering wheel is hard against the lock
