When Ignition Replacement Is the Right Call

Sometimes an ignition cylinder is just too far gone for repair. Maybe the internal mechanism is shattered, the steering wheel lock has seized into the cylinder, or someone tried to force it (or punch it out during a theft attempt) and the internals are destroyed. When repair isn't viable, we replace the entire ignition lock cylinder with new hardware.

This is more involved than a simple repair — it requires removing the steering column trim, disconnecting the wiring harness, and carefully transferring or replacing the key code so your existing keys still work. See our ignition repair service for less serious issues.

When You Need Full Replacement

  • Cylinder won't turn at all and can't be repaired — broken internal mechanism, severely worn wafers, or major debris damage
  • Theft attempt — someone tried to punch out, drill, or force the ignition cylinder. Even if they failed to steal the car, the cylinder is typically destroyed.
  • Steering wheel lock seized into the cylinder — the lock pin has locked itself permanently inside the ignition mechanism
  • Worn out beyond repair — some older or high-mileage cylinders are simply at end of life
  • Key broken inside and unrecoverable — rare, but occasionally a broken key piece is jammed so deeply that extraction isn't possible without destroying the cylinder

What's Involved in Ignition Replacement

Replacing an ignition cylinder is significantly more work than a key cut. The process:

  • Remove steering column trim — access the cylinder housing
  • Disconnect electrical connections — ignition switch wiring, sometimes airbag-related connections (carefully)
  • Release the cylinder retainer pin — requires the key to be in the correct position (a problem when the key won't turn)
  • Install the new cylinder — either pre-coded to match your existing keys, or with new keys that we then program to the vehicle
  • Reconnect & test — all electrical, all key positions, all functions
  • Program any new transponder keys — if the new cylinder came with new keys, those keys need to be paired to the immobilizer

Matching Your Existing Keys

This is where a locksmith beats a dealership. The dealership often replaces the ignition cylinder with one keyed to a totally new code, then you need all your locks re-keyed (or new keys for the doors and trunk too). We can typically code the new ignition cylinder to match your existing door and trunk keys — one key, all locks, just like before. Call (253) 796-8550 with your vehicle info.

FAQ

Ignition Replacement Questions

Most ignition replacements run $285 to $585 depending on vehicle make, model, year, and whether new keys / programming are needed. Compared to dealer pricing of $500-$1,000+, we save customers significantly. Exact quote provided before any work.
Typically 90 minutes to 2.5 hours. Simpler vehicles (older Asian or American models) are at the low end. Modern vehicles with airbag systems integrated into the steering column take longer due to extra disassembly and safety precautions.
Usually not! We can typically code the new cylinder to your existing door and trunk keys so a single key continues to operate all your locks. Some specialty cases require new keys (and we program those at the same time), but matching your existing keys is the default.
We can rekey it to match other car keys you have, but car ignition cylinders use different keyways than house keys, so they can't share a key with your home. Within the vehicle though, ignition + door + trunk can all be on a single matching key.
Modern vehicles often have airbag-related wiring near the steering column. We follow proper safety protocols — disconnecting the battery, allowing capacitors to discharge, and avoiding the airbag circuit. Standard procedure, but it adds a few minutes to the job.
If the damage was caused by attempted theft or vandalism, often yes — comprehensive coverage typically pays for theft-related damage. We can provide an itemized invoice for your insurance claim. For normal wear-and-tear failure, replacement is out-of-pocket.
