When Ignition Replacement Is the Right Call
Sometimes an ignition cylinder is just too far gone for repair. Maybe the internal mechanism is shattered, the steering wheel lock has seized into the cylinder, or someone tried to force it (or punch it out during a theft attempt) and the internals are destroyed. When repair isn't viable, we replace the entire ignition lock cylinder with new hardware.

When You Need Full Replacement
- Cylinder won't turn at all and can't be repaired — broken internal mechanism, severely worn wafers, or major debris damage
- Theft attempt — someone tried to punch out, drill, or force the ignition cylinder. Even if they failed to steal the car, the cylinder is typically destroyed.
- Steering wheel lock seized into the cylinder — the lock pin has locked itself permanently inside the ignition mechanism
- Worn out beyond repair — some older or high-mileage cylinders are simply at end of life
- Key broken inside and unrecoverable — rare, but occasionally a broken key piece is jammed so deeply that extraction isn't possible without destroying the cylinder
What's Involved in Ignition Replacement
Replacing an ignition cylinder is significantly more work than a key cut. The process:
- Remove steering column trim — access the cylinder housing
- Disconnect electrical connections — ignition switch wiring, sometimes airbag-related connections (carefully)
- Release the cylinder retainer pin — requires the key to be in the correct position (a problem when the key won't turn)
- Install the new cylinder — either pre-coded to match your existing keys, or with new keys that we then program to the vehicle
- Reconnect & test — all electrical, all key positions, all functions
- Program any new transponder keys — if the new cylinder came with new keys, those keys need to be paired to the immobilizer
Matching Your Existing Keys
This is where a locksmith beats a dealership. The dealership often replaces the ignition cylinder with one keyed to a totally new code, then you need all your locks re-keyed (or new keys for the doors and trunk too).
