Remote Key Programming
in Auburn, WA

Standalone remote? Flip key? Remote head key? Auburn Lock & Car Keys programs all types of automotive remotes to your vehicle on-site. Cheaper than the dealer, no appointment needed, mobile service across Auburn and South King County.

Different Remotes, Different Programming

"Remote key" is a catch-all term that covers a few different physical formats:

  • Standalone remotes — A separate fob with lock/unlock/trunk/panic buttons. Used alongside a traditional metal ignition key. Common on older Asian and American vehicles.
  • Remote head keys — A traditional key with the remote built into the plastic head. Single unit, looks like a normal key with buttons on top. Very common 2005-2018.
  • Flip keys (switchblade keys) — The metal blade folds into the remote head like a pocketknife, flipping out when you press a button. Premium feel, common on European and newer Asian vehicles.
  • Smart proximity keys — A different beast entirely. See smart key programming →

All of them require programming to be paired with your specific vehicle's body control module before the buttons will do anything. A new remote bought online or from a parts store is just a hunk of plastic until it's programmed.

How Remote Programming Actually Works

There are three main programming methods depending on your vehicle:

  1. On-board programming sequence — A specific cycle of door / ignition / button actions that puts the car into "learn mode." Common on older Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, GM, and some Honda models. Usually requires two existing working remotes.
  2. OBD-II programming — Diagnostic tool plugged into your OBD-II port talks directly to the car's computer to register the new remote. Standard method for most modern vehicles.
  3. Direct module access — For some specialty European vehicles, we connect directly to the body control module (BCM) using specialty cables. More involved but it's the only way for those cars.

What We Can Program

  • OEM remotes (original manufacturer brand — Ford, Toyota, Honda, etc.)
  • Quality aftermarket remotes (Strattec, ILCO, KeylessFactory, etc.)
  • Used / recycled remotes — with caveats (some carry leftover programming that has to be cleared first)
  • Replacement remotes you bought online from Amazon, eBay, or specialty parts sites

What We Don't Program

  • Aftermarket alarm or remote-start systems (Viper, Compustar, Avital) — those use entirely different programming methods, typically handled by the installer
  • Generic universal remotes from unknown brands — quality is too variable and they often don't actually work
  • Counterfeit OEM-look-alike remotes from sketchy sellers — we'll usually tell upfront if a remote looks suspect

When You Need This Service

Common Reasons Auburn Drivers Call Us

Bought a Replacement Remote Online

Got a new fob from Amazon or eBay — the buttons don't do anything when you press them. Needs to be paired to your car. We program.

Remote Stopped Working

Battery is fresh, fob looks fine, but the car doesn't respond. Sometimes a remote loses its sync and needs to be re-registered.

Adding a Second Remote

Want an extra working fob for another driver or as a backup. We program additional remotes to your existing system.

Used Car Came With No Remote

Vehicle came with just a metal key — no remote at all. We source and program a working remote in the same visit.

Our Process

How Remote Key Programming Works

Most remote programming takes 15-45 minutes from when we arrive.

01

Confirm Compatibility

Vehicle year/make/model checked against our database. We verify the remote you have (or want) actually works with your car.

02

Connect & Program

Most cars: OBD-II port connection. Some on-board sequence programming if applicable. Specialty vehicles: direct module access.

03

Pair the Remote

New remote registered with the body control module. We add it to the authorized list (and optionally deactivate any lost / stolen remotes).

04

Function Test

Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, remote start (if equipped) — every button on every newly programmed remote tested before payment.

FAQ

Remote Key Programming Questions

Programming alone (you supply the remote): $45-$95 per remote. Full service with a new OEM remote: $125-$285. Flip key with cut blade + programming: $155-$325. Always 30-60% less than dealer pricing.
Yes — this is one of our most common remote programming jobs. As long as the remote is the right model for your vehicle (correct frequency and protocol), we can program it to work in 15-30 minutes. Bring it and we'll handle it.
For some older vehicles, yes — Ford (most pre-2015), Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep (most pre-2014), and a few others have a documented DIY key-cycling sequence you can do without tools. For most modern vehicles, programming requires diagnostic equipment plugged into the OBD-II port. Also, DIY methods almost always require two existing working remotes — which most people calling us don't have.
Usually no — we add the new remote without erasing existing ones. However, if you specifically want to deactivate lost or stolen remotes for security, we can reset the system so only the new ones we program will work. We always ask before doing this.
No — remote types vary widely by vehicle. Some are standalone fobs (just buttons), some are flip keys (blade folds out), some are remote head keys (key with built-in remote head). The wrong remote for your vehicle won't work no matter how well it's programmed. Tell us your vehicle year/make/model and we'll confirm the right type.
Depends on the vehicle. Typical limit is 4 to 8 remotes per vehicle for most modern cars. Once you hit the limit, you have to deactivate an existing remote before adding a new one. Plenty for most households.
