Key Fob Programming
in Auburn, WA

Got a key fob that needs programming to your car? Auburn Lock & Car Keys programs remote head keys, flip keys, and standalone remotes for most vehicles — on-site, same day, no dealer visit needed. Way less than dealer pricing.

Key Fob vs. Transponder Key — What's the Difference?

The terms get used interchangeably but they're technically different things:

  • Transponder chip — The tiny embedded chip that proves to your car's immobilizer that you have the right key. Allows the engine to start. More on transponder programming →
  • Key fob / remote — The wireless lock/unlock/trunk/panic buttons. Works at a distance — press to unlock from across the parking lot. Doesn't have anything to do with starting the engine.
  • Smart proximity key — Combines both, plus keyless ignition (push-to-start vehicles). Smart key programming →

Most modern car keys combine the transponder chip and a remote fob in a single unit called a remote head key or flip key. When we say "key fob programming," we usually mean pairing the remote portion to your car's body control module (BCM) so the buttons work.

When You Need Key Fob Programming

  • You bought a replacement fob online — The fob came in the mail and the buttons don't do anything when you press them. Needs to be paired to your specific vehicle.
  • The remote stopped working on your existing key — Sometimes a fob loses its sync with the car (low battery period, electrical issues, etc.) and needs reprogramming.
  • You replaced your key entirely — New keys we cut typically include programming as part of the service.
  • You added a remote to a basic key — Upgrading from a non-remote transponder key to a remote head key.
  • Buttons work erratically — Sometimes a reprogram clears intermittent issues; sometimes the fob needs replacement.

How Fob Programming Works

Depends on the car. Three main methods:

  • On-board programming — For some vehicles (older Fords, Chryslers, GMs, some Hondas), the fob can be programmed using a specific key-cycling sequence inside the car. No equipment needed but you typically need 2 working keys.
  • OBD-II programming — Most modern vehicles. We connect a professional diagnostic tool to your OBD-II port and program the fob through the vehicle's computer. Fast, secure, manufacturer-correct.
  • Direct module programming — For some specialty / European vehicles, we connect directly to the BCM with specialty cables. More complex but it's how it has to be done.

When You Need This Service

Common Reasons Auburn Drivers Call Us

Bought a Fob Online

Amazon or eBay fob arrived. It's a real OEM unit but the buttons do nothing — needs to be paired to your specific car.

Remote Quit Working

Battery replaced and it still doesn't work? Sometimes the fob loses its pairing and needs to be re-registered to the vehicle.

Adding a Spare Remote

Want a second working fob for another driver or as a backup? We program additional remotes to your existing key system.

After Battery Swap

Some vehicles temporarily lose fob sync after a battery disconnect or replacement. A quick reprogram restores it.

Our Process

How Key Fob Programming Works

Most key fob programming jobs are quick — usually 15 to 30 minutes.

01

Verify the Fob Type

Different vehicles use different fob frequencies and protocols. We confirm yours matches before programming.

02

Connect to the Vehicle

Most cars: OBD-II diagnostic port plug-in. Some: direct module access. We use the manufacturer-approved method.

03

Pair the Fob

We register the fob's unique ID with your car's body control module. New fobs become recognized, old lost fobs can be deactivated for security.

04

Function Test

Lock, unlock, trunk, panic — we press every button and confirm proper response before you pay.

FAQ

Key Fob Programming Questions

Programming alone (you supply the fob) typically runs $45-$95. Full service with a new OEM or aftermarket fob is $125-$250 for most vehicles depending on the fob model. Always 30-60% less than dealer pricing.
For some older vehicles, yes — Ford, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, and some Honda/Acura models have a DIY key-cycling sequence you can do in the car. You can find the procedure for your specific vehicle online. For most modern vehicles, programming requires a diagnostic tool and manufacturer access codes. Plus, DIY methods usually need two existing working keys.
Often yes, sometimes no. Quality aftermarket fobs from reputable suppliers (Strattec, KeylessFactory, etc.) function identically to OEM at a lower price. Cheap no-name fobs from random Amazon sellers sometimes have weaker range, lower-quality buttons, and shorter battery life. We can advise on quality options or program one you've already purchased.
Most programming jobs take 15 to 30 minutes including the diagnostic connection and pairing. Some vehicles with built-in security timers can take longer.
Usually yes. First we'd check the battery (most common cause). If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob may have lost sync with the car and need reprogramming, or the fob's internal electronics may have failed. We can diagnose and either reprogram or replace as needed.
Programming aftermarket alarm or remote start systems (Viper, Compustar, Avital, etc.) is a different specialty — we typically refer those to the shop that installed the system originally. Factory-installed OEM remotes and fobs are what we handle.
