Different Remotes, Different Programming
"Remote key" is a catch-all term that covers a few different physical formats:
- Standalone remotes — A separate fob with lock/unlock/trunk/panic buttons. Used alongside a traditional metal ignition key. Common on older Asian and American vehicles.
- Remote head keys — A traditional key with the remote built into the plastic head. Single unit, looks like a normal key with buttons on top. Very common 2005-2018.
- Flip keys (switchblade keys) — The metal blade folds into the remote head like a pocketknife, flipping out when you press a button. Premium feel, common on European and newer Asian vehicles.

All of them require programming to be paired with your specific vehicle's body control module before the buttons will do anything. A new remote bought online or from a parts store is just a hunk of plastic until it's programmed.
How Remote Programming Actually Works
There are three main programming methods depending on your vehicle:
- On-board programming sequence — A specific cycle of door / ignition / button actions that puts the car into "learn mode." Common on older Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, GM, and some Honda models. Usually requires two existing working remotes.
- OBD-II programming — Diagnostic tool plugged into your OBD-II port talks directly to the car's computer to register the new remote. Standard method for most modern vehicles.
- Direct module access — For some specialty European vehicles, we connect directly to the body control module (BCM) using specialty cables. More involved but it's the only way for those cars.
What We Can Program
- OEM remotes (original manufacturer brand — Ford, Toyota, Honda, etc.)
- Quality aftermarket remotes (Strattec, ILCO, KeylessFactory, etc.)
- Used / recycled remotes — with caveats (some carry leftover programming that has to be cleared first)
- Replacement remotes you bought online from Amazon, eBay, or specialty parts sites
What We Don't Program
- Aftermarket alarm or remote-start systems (Viper, Compustar, Avital) — those use entirely different programming methods, typically handled by the installer
- Generic universal remotes from unknown brands — quality is too variable and they often don't actually work
- Counterfeit OEM-look-alike remotes from sketchy sellers — we'll usually tell upfront if a remote looks suspect
